The Augustana Cross Country Running team had an early start on Saturday, leaving Camrose at 6am to travel all the way to Grand Prarie. This race was the third in the ACAC Grand Prix series and the same course will be used for the CCAA National Championship this coming November. Because of the distance, another ACAC Grand Prix event was held in Lethbridge on the same day for teams in the southern part of the province, resulting in fewer ACAC runners than usual.
The race course consisted of a loop which was just over 2km, run three times by the women and four times for the men for a total of approxamitely 6km and 8km respectively. The course had a good number of tight corners and couple moderate hills but was not too challenging all round. Conditions were warm, windy and dry: quite favourable for running.
The women ran first, with Reese Bendiksen and Serena Isley representing the Vikings. Reese placed 2nd among the ACAC athletes with a time of 26:34. Serena battled through an ankle injury and came in 13th with a strong finish.
The mens event saw seven Augustana runners. Michio Green led them with a very strong time of 29:15 resulting in a 2nd place overall finish. Nathanael Tabert trailed behind Michio a ways and secured a 3rd place ACAC finish. Not too far behind, Ben Nawrot came in 5th, followed by Dawson Fenrich in 8th and Sam Nawrot who finished 11th. Jonas Stoll-pott and Jackson Sweder rounded out the pack with 14th and 15th place finishes respectively. Grand Prarie was also blessed to have the legendary Augustana coach Gerhard ‘The German Rocket’ Lotz grace its trails with the soles of his shoes as he raced in the masters category. The men were top overall among ACAC teams.
Next week, the team heads to Calgary to run ACAC Grand Prix #4 on the course at which ACAC Championships will be held later in the fall.
Until then, GO VIKINGS! RAH RAH RAH!
